About BarhauL Barhaul has around 20 employees and are one of the larger employers in the Aberfeldy area. The core business revolves around the mineral barite. This mineral is mined locally at the Foss Mine, high up in the hills near Meall Tairneachan. It is transported from there, to our yard in Aberfeldy. It is then put through various crushers and screened to a uniform size. Barite, a name that was derived from the Greek word "barus" (heavy), is the mineralogical name for barium sulfate. In commerce, the mineral is sometimes referred to as "barytes." Barite is widely used in the drilling industry as a dense slurry—drilling mud—that supports the weight of the drill string. It also has medical uses as a filling for body cavities that is opaque to x-rays. Most of the Barite mined locally is transported by Barhaul to Aberdeen, however it has been used in the building of x-ray walls in hospitals, and in a project building a particle accelerator near Oxford. Barhaul has diversified into other areas and now has a number of well established businesses in the Aberfeldy area, these include Barhaul's Builders Merchant, Macgas Aberfeldy, Plant and Tool Hire and Van Hire. All are exceptionally busy, and are continually expanding to meet demand.
